Caro, a 'troubleshooting' relief courier
Last summer I was working as a relief courier for Selectcamp; this means a lot of travalling, working for a few weeks on several campsites and hopping on to the next. You won't find more of an adventure...
So there I am, on my own at the airport…. I just said goodbye to friends and family and I’m all ready for a great season with Selectcamp. A lot is going through my mind and I am wondering why the hell I thought of leaving home for 5 months….But, then I step into the plane and final the destination is in sight, THE SUN!
I arrived in France at the beginning of April, on a campsite where there was still a lot of work to be done. I am not exaggerating because I had to clean and prepare 19 accommodations by myself. Normally you this is done with more colleagues but this can be part of a relief courier’s job. Eventually however, the fact that your guests are enjoying their holiday in one of your well prepared accommodation, gave me great satisfaction. Playing with the kids on the slides and being invited for dinner is a great reward. Unfortunately, I had to work in the reception during their dinner time, but those sweet kids just brought pancakes to me.
Together with Selectcamp colleagues and couriers from other companies made my work an international world. I was the only Dutch Courier on the first campsite I worked and I was soon known as Dutchy #1. Just as I was settled the next challenge announced itself. You’re a relief courier or not! So I packed my bags and worked very hard on a campsite on the Adriatic Coast in Italy. A week later I transferred to another campsite nearby.
Together with another Selectcamp colleague we ran ‘our’ campsite and watched the guests enjoy their summer. This time the campsite was smaller, so the contact with the guests was more face to face. A real pleasure! Halfway through the season I switch to a small and friendly campsite in the Lake Garda area where at one instance I was pulled up on the stage by the entertainment team to join the Mini-disco!
Of course I experienced difficult times, especially when I had to say goodbye to my
colleagues and also during special holidays which i normally celebrate with family and friends but when you tell home in a phone call about the great experiences you’re undergoing you immediately cheer up!
After 5 months of hard work, sweating, getting tanned and enjoying myself, it was time to go home. On my birthday I arrived at Schiphol where my parents and friends were waiting for me with muffins. What a great ending to a great summer!
Ciao! Caro
