Camping Life!
After you have had your interview for the courier job and you’ve been hired to work for Selectcamp.....thinking about how life is going to be on a campsite can start!
Through this explanation we hope we can give you a realistic view on what to expect upon arrival on your campsite.
Travelling!
Let’s start with the trip to your campsite in Holland, Italy, France or Spain. There two options; by plain or taking your own car. If you choose to travel by car Selectcamp will pay expenses to cover a part of the costs. Before you leave home we will know when you will arrive on the campsite, so that your colleagues know when to expect you and, of course, welcome you. You get to decide how long you are going to take to arrive at the campsite. Some couriers treat the trip as a small holiday before they arrive.
Naturally not everyone wants to come by car so you can choose to fly south. Selectcamp will book your flight and arrange a pick-up by one of your colleagues as soon as you land. Before we book the flight we again will go through the dates and arrival times. When you choose to fly, please make sure your luggage doesn’t exceed the weight limit determined by the airline you fly with. This can vary from 15 to 20 kilo of check-in luggage and a maximum of 10 kilo hand luggage. If you exceed the limit you will have to pay the extra costs yourself. The choice and the challenge is up to you!
Living!
Now you have arrived the real “courier life” finally starts. You will live in a Selectcamp chalet tent which you perhaps will have to clean or tidy before you can move in with your own things. But, watch out! You will live together with one of your colleagues, so before you enthusiastically start to decorate the tent, please think of each other. Teamwork starts on day one! Everyone has their own ‘sleeping room’, called an inner. The inner you can decorate whichever way you like with photo’s, poster, books etc. This will be your home for the whole season.
Breakfast – lunch – dinner!
This you will have to take care of yourself. How you arrange this on the campsite differs per team. Usually you will cook and eat together. Everyone has their own habits; maybe your colleague starts the day with just a cup of coffee, while you need at least 3 sandwiches before work. You will find out with the team what works best. Perhaps you love cooking, so it can be up to you to cook your colleague’s dinner every night so they can do the dishes afterwards?!
Family or friends reunion!
You work at the time of the year in which your family or friends probably have a holiday. Of course your family has the opportunity to visit you and see all the great work you do (and your tan). If they want to stay on the campsite you work on (or a Selectcamp campsite the region) they will receive a family discount of 10%. All they have to do is mention your name when they book their accommodation. They are not allowed to stay over in your chalet tent.
Tip; give your family a shopping list with all sorts of treats from home. It will taste a lot better when you are abroad.
Days off!
After working for six days and all the families are having a good time, it’s time for you to enjoy a day off. On your day off you can do whatever you like; do what every tourist does and go sightseeing, visit local markets, go shopping, dive in the pool, or sunbathing on the beach. Enough things to keep you busy.
Typical ‘courier life’
What is typical for living as a courier? One thing you need to realise is that whenever you walk around in your Selectcamp uniform, not just the Selectcamp guests will see you as an employee of the campsite but all the camping guests will. So, that makes you the recognisable Selectcamp spokesperson for the entire campsite. Also, when you have the day off and you decide to dive into the swimming pool, campsite guests will recognize you, so always keep that in mind!
Something else that can happen to you is ‘queuing in front of the showers’. At a given time in the day people are getting tired and leave the pool or the beach to take a shower before lighting their barbeques. These are the busy times at the sanitary buildings. After a few times you will know when to avoid the queue!
All in all a great job to have experienced at least once in your lifetime! We wish you a great season with Selectcamp.
